Dr. Monat teaches courses in Risk Management and Decision Analysis, Systems Thinking, System Optimization, and Business Practices. He has both management and teaching experience in the medical device, separations, food & beverage, business consulting, and environmental industries, having served as President of Harvard Clinical Technology, President and Founder of Business Growth Specialists, Inc., as Sr. Vice-President of Pall Corporation, and in a variety of executive positions for Koch Membrane Systems, Inc. He has taught at WPI since 2004.
As a systems engineer I view optimizing engineering endeavors as going beyond algorithmic optimization to include a humanitarian mission, using systems engineering tools, patterns, techniques, methods, themes, and philosophies to do policy modeling, all with the common goal of mission success. While engineering tools have brought about much excellence and productivity, we haven't always applied these powerful tools to goals such as human diversity in engineering, or looking at the full human as a participant in the human workforce.
"Preparing Students for the Future of Work"
WPI & INCOSE
WPI's partnership with the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) helps our students achieve professional recognition as a systems engineer. INCOSE is a not-for-profit membership organization with chapters supporting and promoting systems engineering worldwide. WPI’s Director for Systems Engineering Programs, Don Gelosh, PhD, currently serves as the INCOSE Services Director, a position that oversees the value streams of Certification, Events, and Professional Development. In addition, INCOSE approved WPI’s updated SYS 501. Concepts of Systems Engineering for Academic Equivalency. This will allow any student who receives a final score of 85% or better to waive the Knowledge Exam for INCOSE’s SE Professional certification program, both at the Associate (ASEP) and Certified (CSEP) levels.
