Ticks Suck

Thanks to a mild winter, ticks are already out in large numbers and tick-borne diseases are on the rise for both humans and our canine companions. These nasty bloodsuckers wait in tall grass and thick vegetation and have specialized “Haller’s Organs” on their front legs that sense heat and carbon dioxide so they can latch onto the first animal—like you! —that walks by.  Lyme disease and babesiosis are now endemic in all six states in New England and can have serious complications, requiring weeks of antibiotic treatment, so take precautions to avoid being a tick’s next meal:

  • Treat clothing and gear with products containing 0.5% permethrin
  • Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter
  • Walk in the center of trails
  • Examine gear and pets after walking outdoors
  • Shower soon after being outdoors
  • Check your body and clothing for ticks after being outdoors

COVID is Still Around

Continue to test whenever COVID symptoms arise and consider getting a booster this summer to help protect yourself and minimize the spread of illness. Watch for any COVID communications over the summer and plan to test before returning to campus in the fall.

Design Your Summer to Make it Last

Research shows that our perception of time speeds up as we age, so it may feel like summer is so much shorter than the endless, lazy days you might remember from childhood. Gretchen Rubin, host of the podcast “Happier with Gretchen Rubin,” suggests intentionally designing your summer to capture some of that summer spaciousness feeling. A few things you might try:

  • Be a tourist in your hometown: Check out the museums, shops, and festivals wherever you live.
  • Try a new restaurant or ice cream shop—or a new recipe to make at home—each week.
  • Plan a summer of re-reading your favorite books or re-watching your favorite TV series.
  • If you want to spend more time with family or friends, put the dates on your calendar and plan your gathering—consider cookouts, hikes, star gazing, or game nights.
