This program offers numerous opportunities for undergraduate students to formally and informally study Africa and the African diaspora. Students can engage and deepen their understanding of African culture, its diasporas, societies, politics, and economies through courses, language studies, events, and student organizations. The flexibility of the program allows students from all fields of study to design their path based on their specific interests in Africa and the African diaspora.

For undergraduate students pursuing Africana Studies, the curriculum begins with an introductory course that explores Africana issues from different perspectives. It culminates in a colloquium where students present their research. Throughout their courses, students can design their path as broad or as focused as their individual interests allow.

Language study, though not mandatory, is highly recommended as it greatly enhances knowledge of African culture and provides more opportunities for travel and career prospects in Africa and the African diaspora. Study abroad opportunities are also offered each year.

Academics

The interdisciplinary Africana Studies Minor examines the potential for development and innovation in human, natural, cultural, and economic capital. The Minor enables students to examine the political, sociocultural, economic, historical influences systematically and critically, and agency of peoples of African descent around the world to better grasp their unique experiences and contributions. Students will concentrate their studies on various tracks and interests: Africa, African American community, the Caribbean, or the global African diaspora.

With an interdisciplinary and integrated understanding and appreciation of the rich environment, cultures, arts, institutions, sciences, technologies, histories, political economies, and philosophies of peoples of African descent, the program aims to inform, enrich, and give context to students’ STEM projects within the above-mentioned geographical areas. The Africana Studies minor consists of two units of coursework.
