Management Essentials

In Fall 2023, the Division of Talent & Inclusion introduced Management Essentials, an interactive training program for new managers. This program serves to provide new managers with the tools and skills necessary to lead their teams with competence, confidence, and compassion.

In this program, participants:

  • Learn about their managing style
  • Further develop the competence needed to be an effective manager
  • Enhance skills to boost productivity and establish a sustainable work-life integration
  • Learn methods to develop trusted relationships with team members, co-workers, and their own manager and improve collaboration and engagement
  • Strengthen their communication skills to motivate team members, foster accountability, and navigate through crucial conversations.

Program Eligibility

The program is open to faculty and staff. To be eligible for the program, applicants must hold a supervisory position and must have less than 3 years of managing experience. It serves to provide newer managers with a professional development curriculum backed by best practices, engaging activities, and useful resources.

Sign Up Process

For the Fall 2024 cohort, the program will be established via a first come, first serve process. Employees interested in the program will be need complete this form. If they meet the eligibility requirements, they will receive confirmation that they have been enrolled into the program. 

Please note that space in this year’s program cohort is limited; therefore, employees are encouraged to submit their application as soon as possible. Applications are due no later than EOD September 10th.

Program

The first program cohort began on October 26th, 2023; it ran until February 15th, 2024. 

The second cohort will start in Fall 2024, as posted below, and will run on Mondays and Wednesdays (in September- October) from 9:30 to 1 pm. Lunch will be provided. Please check below for session descriptions. 

If applying for the program, participants are expected to commit to attending all sessions.

Session 1: Your Role as a Manager (Monday, September 16)

Understand the fundamental responsibilities and expectations of a manager. Learn how to transition from an individual contributor to a manager, set clear goals, and align your team's efforts with organizational objectives.

Session 2: The Employee Journey (Wednesday, September 18)

Explore the stages of the employee lifecycle, from recruitment to exit. Gain insights into how to support and develop your team at each stage, ensuring a positive and productive journey for every employee.

Session 3: Team Dynamics – Development & Cohesion (Monday, September 23)

Delve into the principles of team development and dynamics. Learn how to build a cohesive team, foster collaboration, and navigate the stages of team growth to enhance overall performance.

Session 4: Well-being, Growth Mindset, and Emotions (Wednesday, September 25)

Understand the critical role of well-being and emotional intelligence in effective leadership. Learn strategies to promote a growth mindset within your team, support mental and emotional health, and create a positive, resilient workplace culture.

Session 5: Fostering Effective Feedback (Monday, September 30)

Explore the art of giving and receiving feedback. Learn techniques to deliver constructive feedback that drives improvement and fosters a culture of open communication and continuous development within your team.

Session 6: Performance Management (Wednesday, October 2)

Learn the essentials of performance management, from setting clear expectations to conducting effective performance reviews. Equip yourself with the tools to manage performance issues and recognize achievements, ensuring your team remains motivated and productive.
