Leadership Academy

Leadership Academy

The Leadership Academy is a distinctive leadership development program aimed at helping employees expand and apply their skillsets for lasting impact. This program focuses on teaching and practicing essential skills necessary for leading and inspiring others. The primary goal is to equip employees with the comprehensive knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for effective supervision and leadership. At the end of the program, participants receive a certificate of completion.

The program was launched in Spring 2023 with a cohort of 19 faculty and staff from across the university. Participants were nominated by leadership across campus and represented a diverse mix of longtime WPI faculty and staff who have shown interest in growing into larger roles as well as relatively new hires who have already stood out among their peers.

Program Eligibility

The program is intended for WPI leaders who seek to enhance their leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities. Selection works through a nomination process whereby members of management council consult with managers/supervisors in their respective areas to identify high potential employees who are currently serving in leadership roles (academic or administrative) and would welcome and benefit from further leadership development.

Program

The program’s curriculum is interactive and will focus on key competencies needed to be successful in a leadership role.

The first cohort ran in Spring 2023 and included six sessions. The cohort was able to get together again for a reunion, a seventh session in Spring 2024. A second cohort is scheduled to launch in Spring 2025.

A full schedule will be available soon. Breakfast and other refreshments will be provided each day.

Session 1: Building Competencies for Inclusive Leadership

Leadership is essential to any organization that wishes to be efficient and achieve its aims. As our workforce becomes more diverse, we are best able to leverage the value of this diversity when we role model inclusive behaviors and foster a workplace climate that encourages all employees to bring their whole selves to work every day. In turn, this provides employees with the positive workplace experience that they deserve. In this session, participants will learn important competencies needed to build their own brand of inclusive leadership.

Session 2: Leading with Your Strengths

Elevate your leadership capabilities by diving deep into CliftonStrengths and uncovering your top talent themes. Understand how these themes define your leadership style and empower you to inspire confidence, drive peak performance, foster stronger relationships, and achieve strategic goals. In this interactive session, you will gain strategies to leverage your strengths, enabling you to unlock your full leadership potential and create lasting impact in your organization and beyond. Participants will need to complete the CliftonStrengths for Leaders prior to this session.

Session 3: Leading with Emotional Intelligence

Leaders are expected to be exemplary, self-regulate their emotions, and understand the emotions of others, under continually challenging and evolving circumstances. This session helps participants understand the foundational pillars of emotional intelligence. Participants will also gain greater self-awareness and understand others’ awareness, understand how to manage their emotional reactions, learn to deal more effectively with difficult situations, improve interpersonal communication, and improve their decision making. Participants will need to complete the EQ 360 prior to this session.

Session 5: Managing Across Differences & Uncovering our Biases

Leaders have the greatest potential to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment. This session will delve into the mindset, individual thinking, and actions essential for effectively managing diverse teams. Gain heightened awareness of implicit and unconscious biases and acquire practical tools to mitigate them. Empower yourself to create a more inclusive workplace and lead by example in championing diversity and equity.

This session will provide an overview of different states of employee well-being in the work engagement – burnout continuum. Participants will learn how to reignite their own and their team members’ engagement and mitigate burnout.
