The Math Meet serves as reaffirmation of WPI's commitment to K-12 outreach and to encouraging young, bright minds to excel in mathematics. WPI is responding to the nation’s workforce needs calling for individuals with strong quantitative skills.
Details
Nearly 100 public and private high schools from New England will participate in WPI's 25th Annual Invitational Mathematics Meet. WPI will be awarding both individual and team scholarship cash prizes to WPI totaling more than $100,000. The first-place winner of the individual student competition will win a $3,000 scholarship to WPI and a plaque, while the second- and third-place winners will receive $2,000 and $1,500 scholarships to WPI, respectively. Each of the remaining schools' top scorers will be awarded $1,000 scholarships to WPI. Additionally, the top nine team competition winners will receive WPI scholarships of up to $1,000 per team member.
The individual student competition will take place from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m., and the team competition occurs from 9:50 to 10:35 a.m. Following the competition, students will listen to guest speaker Sara Del Valle, a scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, N.M. Del Valle is among a team of researchers who have been awarded a five-year grant by the National Institutes of Health for Modeling Infectious Disease Agents (MIDAS). Her topic is titled "ACHOO! What can you do to reduce disease spread?"
The awards ceremony will start at 1:15 p.m. in the Campus Center's Odeum room.
