Experts on big data
Big data refers to extremely large and complex data sets that are difficult to process and analyze using traditional data processing methods. These data sets are generated from a variety of sources including social media, sensors, and transactional systems. The key characteristics of big data are the “Five Vs”: volume, variety, velocity, value and veracity.
Volume refers to the sheer amount of data that is being generated, with the ability to store, process and analyze data on a massive scale. Variety refers to the different types of data that are being generated, including structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data. Velocity refers to the speed at which data is being generated and processed, with the ability to analyze data in real-time. Veracity refers to the uncertainty and ambiguity of data, and the need to ensure data quality. Value refers to the value big data provides, and what organizations can do with that data.
Big data technologies such as Hadoop and Spark are used to store and process large data sets, while machine learning and analytics tools are used to extract insights and make predictions. WPI experts on bioinspired materials are available to talk about the integration of big data into everyday life, including its applications in healthcare, finance, retail, and marketing.
