Title: The (in)discreet charm of quantum walks

Abstract: This talk describes a brief glimpse of quantum computing through the lens of quantum walks.

First, we trace the origins of quantum walks on graphs. Then, we spotlight the surprising role that quantum walks played in quantum computing. Finally, we mention a few recent developments in this area. This talk does not contain a comprehensive account of quantum walks, but it nevertheless aims to motivate and highlight its beguiling appeal and consequential applications. No background in quantum mechanics is assumed for this talk.

Biographical sketch: C. Tamon received a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, prior to joining Clarkson University in 1996. He has held visiting positions at Institut Henri Poincaré (Paris), Centre de Recherches Mathématiques (Montréal), and Harvey Mudd College. His research interest is approximately in theoretical computer science, and had been supported by the National Science Foundation, National Security Agency, and Air Force Research Laboratory.
