Sports & RecreationWomen's Rowing varsity eight rowed to its best-ever finish Saturday at the New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond. The Crimson and Gray, who saw all four of its entries qualify for their respective grand finals, saw its varsity eight finish second and take home the silver medal. The grand final saw the eighth-ranked Engineers finish second (6:53.421) ahead of the Cardinals (6:56.702), No. 5 Wellesley (6:59.140), No. 4 Williams (7:00.496) and No. 9 Tufts (7:03.064). Top-ranked and defending national champions Bates won the star-studded final in a time of 6:46.476.
Men's Rowing saw all four of its boats reach their respective grand finals Saturday at New England Rowing Championship on Lake Quinsigamond. Overall the Engineers amassed 65.50 team points to place fourth out of 23 crews. The defending champion varsity eight finished fifth (6:07.959) in the afternoon finals, just two seconds out of a medal behind third place Williams (6:06.267) and fourth place UMass (6:06.491) in a race won by Bates (5:58.863).
Sydney Packard won the 800-meter run to help lead Women’s Track and Field to an eighth-place showing at the Division III New England Championships at MIT. Packard handed in a time of 2:10.53 and was followed by Lea Strangio with a season-low 2:13.67 to secure fifth. The duo went on to close out the completion by teaming with Katie Nugent and Taylor Teed for a fifth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:59.92.
Men's Track & Field’s 4x400-meter relay captured gold as WPI finished ninth at the Division III New England Championships at MIT. Alex Rus, Paul-Henry Schoenhagen, Nick Fleury and Warren Staver secured the outdoor portion of WPI's sweep of the event with a time of 3:16.06, which is currently ninth on the NCAA Division III performance list. Earlier in the week, Brian Chabot was named as the 2018 NEWMAC Men's Track & Field Coach of the Year. He has now earned seven such honors, including the NEWMAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year honors this past fall.
Ama Biney scored her 200th run and senior classmate Nina Murphy-Cook moved into second place all-time in Division III with her 174th stolen base as second-seeded Softball went 2-2 in the NEWMAC Tournament. WPI the fourth-ranked team on the regional scroll, narrowly missed selection into the NCAA Tournament and finished with a 29-13 overall record.
The spring championship season continues this weekend. Men’s and Women’s Rowing is on Lake Quinsigamond of Friday for the National Invitational Rowing Championships and Men’s and Women’s Track and Field is at Dartmouth for the All New England All-Divisions Championships on Friday and Saturday.
