Sports & RecreationDavid Reynolds, Brian Brooks, Jake Scarponi and Logan Gaudette each earned All-NEWMAC honors as Men's Cross Country placed second at Sunday's NEWMAC Championship hosted by Babson at Franklin Park. WPI, the seventh-ranked team in the USTFCCCA New England poll, was the runner-up for the sixth consecutive season after posting a program-low 42 points. Ari Rozen secured All-Conference accolades for the third time in her career in helping the WPI women's cross-country team finish fourth.
Luke Reiniger scored his fourth goal of the season, the eventual winning goal, in the 71st minute to lift visiting Men’s Soccer over Clark in the final regular season NEWMAC game for both teams. The victory, coupled with Babson's 4-1 victory at Coast Guard, give the Engineers a share of its second NEWMAC regular season in the last three seasons. The Crimson and Gray, who haven't lost since Sept. 28, improve to 11-2-4 and 5-0-2 in the NEWMAC and will appear in their third-straight NEWMAC Semifinal. WPI will host the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal between fourth-seeded Clark and fifth-seeded MIT in a semifinal Thursday at 7pm.
Sofia Orrico and Annika Keck registered second half goals as Women's Soccer rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat host Springfield and earn a home game in next week's NEWMAC Championship Tournament. WPI improves to 14-4-1 and have a 5-3-1 record in conference while the Pride finish the regular season with a 11-5-2 record and 6-3-1 NEWMAC mark. The Engineers will be the third seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and will host sixth-seeded Wheaton in a quarterfinal at 4pm on Tuesday.
Field Hockey scored three unanswered, second-half goals en route to a 3-1 NEWMAC win over visiting Mount Holyoke Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. The results assures a rematch in the upcoming NEWMAC Field Hockey Championships. Third-seeded WPI (16-2, 6-2 NEWMAC) will host the sixth-seeded Lyons (9-9, 3-5) in a quarterfinal contest Tuesday at 7pm. Carly Cidado scored two of the WPI goals, both unassisted off rebounds, to push her season total to 12.
Katherine Pawlak and Molly Silsby helped Women's Swimming and Diving team start out the month of November on a positive note as each won a pair of events to propel the host Engineers to a string of sizable victories in a five-way meet that also included Babson, Brandeis, Smith and Simmons. Pawlak claimed victories in the 50-yard freestyle (25.17) and the 50-yard butterfly (27.60), while Silsby beat the field in both breaststroke events, winning the 50-yard breaststroke in 32.26 seconds and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.61. Sid Williams led the way for Men's Swimming and Diving with a pair of second-place finishes. Williams' blazing time in the 50-yard freestyle was good for second (22.12) and he was the runner up in the 100-yard backstroke.
In addition to the Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer and Field Hockey NEWMAC Tournament games this week, Volleyball earned the seventh seed and will head to second-seeded Wellesley for a 7pm quarterfinal contest Tuesday and Football will host Coast Guard at noon on Saturday for its Senior Day game.
