Department(s):
Information Technology ServicesThe following message was sent out from its@wpi.edu on June 26.
WPI ITS-managed printer security will be improved by accessing printers through WPI’s print server rather than direct printing, Disabling direct printing prevents the receipt of offensive, non-WPI business/academic related print jobs from external senders. This change will only impact printers connected to the printer server and not personal local printers.
Action Needed:
By July 19, 2024 please ensure that you are printing via the print server. Note that “printername” below would be the name of the printer you use, such as GL-helpdesk.
For Windows computers, open Printers.
- If “printername on printers.wpi.edu” is listed, it will not be impacted by the change and no further action is needed.
- If only “printername” is listed, the connection will stop working when the security change is made. To maintain printer access, please follow the instructions for Adding a Network Printer in Windows on the WPI Hub by July 19.
For Mac computers, open Terminal and type the command “lpstat -v”
- If “device for printername: smb://printers.wpi.edu/printername?encryption=no” is listed, it will not be impacted by the change and no further action is needed.
- If “device for printername: ipp://###.###.##.##/ipp/print” is listed, the connection will stop working when the security change is made. To maintain printer access, please follow the instructions for Adding a Network Printer in MacOS on the WPI Hub by July 19th.
ITS Updates Printer Security:
