Okanagan Charter Adoption Spotlight – Mental Health Committee (MHC)
Department(s):
Marketing CommunicationsOn November 13, 2024, WPI will adopt the Okanagan Charter recognizing essential interconnections between people, place, and planet in elevating community health and well-being for those occupying our campus and its environs, both now and into the future.
The following is part of a series of spotlights written by the people behind the resources, spaces, programs, and groups at WPI that work to improve the well-being of all who call WPI home, both here and abroad.
WPI’s Mental Health Committee (MHC) is an open and inclusive group of students dedicated to educating our members on peer support so we can offer the right help and resources. The purpose of the MHC is to understand and advocate for the mental health and wellbeing of the WPI student body and to foster an aware and supportive community that uplifts our peers.
We care deeply about every individual on this campus, and recognize that being a college student isn’t easy, so we hope MHC acts as a safe and supportive community where students can find understanding, connection, and the resources they need to thrive mentally and emotionally. We often host events on campus—whether tabling or hosting activities on the quad—targeted towards offering peer support to our community. We always hold events on Wellness Days, and aim to organize smaller supportive events, especially towards the end of each term.
MHC is a key resource for making real changes at WPI to improve student wellbeing. Many members of MHC hold positions working with administration, faculty, and staff at WPI, where we are able to represent student perspectives on well-being. Our General Body Meetings (GBMs) are held Wednesdays from 4 to 5:15 pm in the Center for Well-Beig Programming Room. At each GBM, we discuss our observations and thoughts on the current state of student wellness, work on ongoing projects, and take time to check in with one another. Occasionally, a faculty or staff member from the WPI community joins us to share how their role connects to student wellness and to learn about the student perspective on mental health from MHC.
There is no time commitment in MHC; we are here as a supportive group and resource to make positive change at WPI. But we hope everyone will follow MHC, complete our feedback forms, and attend events or GBMs occasionally to share concerns and ideas, which will allow us to better collaborate with WPI, support individual needs, and create a better environment for student well-being based on your recommendations.
