CEAE PhD students Rachel Hurley and Xingtong Guo present at the Indoor Air Conference. Rachel is elected as student representative for international organization.

On June 4, 2024, Rachel Hurley, a second year PhD student in Civil, Environmental, & Architectural Engineering advised by Professor Shichao Liu, was elected as the student representative for the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). Her two-year term began in July during the 18th International Conference of ISIAQ in Honolulu, HI, where Rachel and lab mate Xingtong Guo, a fourth year PhD student, and Professor Liu presented their research related to the effects of the indoor environment on occupants. The group delivered a total of six different poster and podium talks.

Xingtong and Rachel’s research focuses on natural disasters. Xingtong presented a podium titled, “Indoor Heat Stress Impairs Emotional and Physical States During Extreme Heat.” Rachel’s poster “Health Symptoms and Mitigation Behaviors Are Associated with Olfactory Perception of Indoor Wildfire Smoke” was one of three student posters to receive an honorable mention. Rachel also delivered a talk related to perceptions of facemask wearing on learning performance during COVID-19.

ISIAQ is an independent, non-profit and interdisciplinary scientific organization that supports the creation of healthy indoor environments. As a student representative, Rachel will focus on enhancing student engagement within the society and creating inclusive spaces and opportunities for student members.
