Barry Posterro Achieves the Designation of Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society

Department(s):

Mathematical Sciences

Associate Teaching Professor Barry Posterro has achieved the designation of Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. Fellow is the highest designation given by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), a professional society of actuaries specializing in the insurance of things (cars, homes, etc.) and worker’s compensation and professional liability policies. This designation is a culmination of years of work and a series of exams. Barry worked in industry for 15 years before joining the Department of Mathematical Sciences, where he primarily teaches courses in the Actuarial Mathematics program. His expertise in ratemaking and estimating unpaid claims has been incorporated into special topics courses, preparing our actuarial students for success in industry. Please read more about Barry Posterro’s accomplishments in a recent member profile for the CAS Actuarial Review.

The Actuarial Program in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute provides a tight-knit, collaborative community of students with two faculty, Professors Jon Abraham and Barry Posterro. Courses are kept relevant to the syllabi of both the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS). The Actuarial Program was recognized by the SOA in 2019 with UCAP status for its relevance to the SOA program of study. Additionally, the Actuarial Program was recognized in 2024 by the CAS with Bronze Tier Status within the CAS University Recognition Program. Many students graduate with two or more exams, VEE credit, and sometimes more. The program’s strong working relationship with both the SOA and the CAS provides our students with professional resources like candidate updates, access to mentor programs, and focused job and internship announcements. Within WPI, the Actuarial Club, participation in Actuarial Case Competitions with other university programs, and a dedicated Actuarial Job Fair have further established the foundation of a wide and diverse professional network.
