Rodica Neamtu
I am a data mining researcher who investigates how to develop and leverage ground-breaking techniques to explore time series datasets at the confluence of theoretical computer science and application domains like medicine, neuroscience, economics, transportation, and complex decision making. With more than fifteen years of teaching experience in various academic institutions, I am committed to using my love and talent for teaching and research to empower others through education to make a difference in the world . I am one of the WPI faculty included in the inaugural cohort of WPI’s new teaching tenure track. I have been promoted in 2022 under the new tenure and promotion policy through WPI’s new tenure track for teachers.
Starting in October 2023, I took over as the Principal Investigator of a 2.5 million dollars NSF S-STEM grant aiming to support Pell-grant students who have an interest in studying computer science, by awarding them up to 15,000 dollars every year for their 4-year undergraduate education at WPI, in addition to offering a wide array of opportunities towards Creating a Path to Achieving Success and a Sense of Belonging in Computer Science. Co-PIs: Debra Boucher (Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies) and Prof. Crystal Brown (SSPS). Senior Personnel: Katherine Chen (Exec. Director STEM Education), Prof. Erin Solovey (CS), Prof. Matthew Ahrens (CS), Prof Francesca Bernardi (Mathematical Sciences), Prof Thomas Noviello (Physics), Prof. Lane Harrison (CS).
Co-directing a project center in Romania alongside Prof. Bogdan Vernescu (Vice-President and Vice-Provost for Research and Innovation) allows me to contribute to building a strong connection between the two cultures that I am deeply anchored in. I am committed to help our students explore other cultures, understand the issues that they are facing, and become part of impactful initiatives to mitigate them. Advising project teams is one of the most engaging and rewarding aspects of my work.
In line with my commitment to broadening participation in computer science in general and AI in particular, I participated in the CRA, Women and Education Chapters, am a co-founder of the Women Interdisciplinary Scholarship Engagement Network (WISE), and am currently leading efforts to expand diversity and inclusion through the introduction of the AI4ALL program at WPI starting in Fall 2022.
