Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET), administered through the Japanese Consulate, sends thousands of young people to Japan each year to promote language skills and international exchange at the local level. To accomplish these goals, JET participants work at public schools and government offices throughout the country. There are two types of positions in the JET Program: Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) and Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs). ALTs team teach as assistants to Japanese teachers of English in public schools. CIRs work in a variety of settings, such as municipal offices or convention bureaus. Japanese-language ability, although helpful, is not required for ALTs, but is mandatory for CIRs.
