Why did you choose to study at WPI?
I originally chose WPI to major in computer science and work as a software engineer when I graduated, but in my first year, I heard about WPI’s Teacher Preparation Program and decided to apply. Since then, I have discovered my passion for teaching computer science and plan to graduate from the program with a Massachusetts teaching license in addition to my CS degree. I also plan to pursue the Master’s in Learning Sciences and Technologies through WPI’s BS/MS program. When I graduate, I want to work in edtech – combining what I learn in both computer science and teaching.
How are you involved with the WPI community?
In addition to the Teacher Preparation Program, I am part of the Inspiring and Developing Educators Association (IDEA), which is WPI’s new club for anyone interested in STEM education. I also enjoy running with the Running Club.
What’s your favorite thing about WPI?
When I first came to WPI, I thought I would spend all my time studying for class, but I have also had the opportunity to meet and work with many people who share my passions and interests and who cheer me on in my endeavors. Whether it’s music, education, or climate change, I have been challenged to broaden my horizons and connect my computer science work with other subjects.
Do you have a faculty or staff mentor?
Professor David Ibbett: My first class with Prof. Ibbett was Topics in Interactive Programming, where we learned to create music with software. I continued to work with Prof. Ibbett over the summer to develop an app for his Multiverse Concert Series’ “Mars Symphony” at the Museum of Science in Boston. Last term, I completed my humanities practicum with Prof. Ibbett as well, where he challenged me to compose music about climate change and nominated me to attend the COP28 climate change conference!
Professor Thomas Noviello: I met Prof. Noviello through the IDEA club as the faculty advisor. I am building a new educational coding language named Wipple, and when I took Electricity and Magnetism with Prof. Noviello last term, he encouraged me to use Wipple for my final project. He also connected me with Mass Academy, where I plan to host a Wipple hackathon. Prof. Noviello has always encouraged me to continue pursuing STEM education and really believes in my work.
How has WPI’s project-based learning influenced your education?
All my favorite classes at WPI have involved projects and group work. In Object-Oriented Design class, for example, my partner and I built a particle collision simulator that, once we got the physics right, displayed all the particles in a turkey shape for Thanksgiving. In my Music and Science practicum, I spent the whole term composing a piece of music to be performed in the campus center. In Business Writing and Communication, I developed my résumé and delivered a presentation with my group. Next year, I will be completing my Interactive Qualifying Project teaching full-time in a classroom. When I graduate, I will have the technical skills and the ability to work effectively with others.
