Project Opportunities
Humanities and Arts Requirement (HUA)

In this project center you will be able to complete your HUA requirement with a Depth in Art while studying arts of the Silk Road. To apply, complete a short application.

Why?

Centuries of ideas have moved between cities of this vast region, transformed by the people who encountered them. It is rich with stories and art to explore and to foster life long appreciation and interest.  We encourage students to question the parameters of tradition, identity, and culture to discover their own responsibilities and opportunities as visual creators in the 21st Century.

What will I be doing? During E1, complete two art courses asynchronously plus meet all Center participants for live (synchronous) discussions facilitated by the Directors. Then, during E2 complete an art practicum.

How can I apply? Contact one of the directors for a link to a short application.

What happens if I am accepted? You will be automatically registered for the below three courses and the directors will ask you to provide some schedule information so that the weekly meeting time can be set.

E1: AR2750 Topics in Studio Art: Mythical Creatures and Mountains

This course explores art from a global perspective. The topics include visual storytelling, historical and cultural interactions, mythical places and creatures, and artifacts. The students will create contemporary 2D and 3D digital projects inspired by the multicultural infusion of the arts of ancient regions such as central Asia, China, and the middle east. Students will design motifs and patterns, digital paintings, and 3D modeling by utilizing software such as Adobe CC and Autodesk Maya. [Information about software licenses TBA.]

E1: AR2750 Topics in Studio Art: Tessellations and Illuminations

This course explores geometry of Indo-Persian art & design. Techniques to compose and paint tessellations with traditional materials will be introduced. Issues from the proliferation of cultural imagery will be reviewed to discover opportunities and responsibilities as contemporary creators. Students will develop studies culminating in creating an original, finished artwork. This course will require individual purchase of a custom art supply kit to complete the course by the time the course begins.

E2: HU3910: Then, Now, and Later: Transformation of an idea.

This practicum asks students to consider temporal states of an idea with personal and/or cultural meaning from which to develop a sequence of 3 original artworks. Students will be responsible to acquire their own art materials.

E2: HU3910: Digital Interpretation of Global Art

In this practicum, students will create a series of digital artworks that draw inspiration from various elements of ancient cultures and civilizations. The artworks may be video, digital maps, animation, 3D, or 2D art. The students will research the global art influences that arose due to traveling, migration, and trades and use them as the basis for their artistic interpretation.
