Mandi, India Project Center - IQP
The small city of Mandi, India is a community of 60,000 located in the northwestern foothills of the Himalaya in Himachal Pradesh. Outside the center, in a quiet valley, the IIT-Mandi is one of the newer additions to the Indian Institute of Technology, known as a premier Institution of National Importance in India. It is the only IIT in the Himalayas, set on a 500-acre campus with views of the foothills. The immediate campus landscape balances wildlife with many brand new facilities, providing access to hiking, bird watching, and plenty of outdoor recreation. Since 2013, WPI students are hosted on campus and live in dorms with IIT students. Students are added to the campus meal plan, and enjoy use of all of the facilities.
Past Mandi students have:
• Improved waste disposal practices at high-altitude trekking sites
• Collected climate change stories in rural mountain villages
• Proposed measures to protect communities from earthquake and landslide risks
Developed and promoted opportunities for women in the Kamand Valley
Assessed technology development for tea production and traditional watermills
