I have been practicing law for 37 years with a concentration in corporate, business and healthcare law.  I have been at Mirick, O’Connell, DeMallie Lougee, LLP since 1980.  I am currently Of Counsel in the Corporate and Business Department. I began my law practice in Boston at the firm of Bingham, Dana Gould.  While at Bingham, I participated in a pro bono rotation with Boston Legal Services in the Fields Corner office in Dorchester.  After Bingham, I joined Burt Taylor, an international firm with offices in Saudi Arabia, and worked in its Al Kobar, Saudi Arabia office representing U.S. and European companies seeking to do business in the Middle East. I joined Mirick O’Connell as a corporate and business lawyer in 1980 and have practiced there ever since.  Prior to transitioning to Of Counsel status, I was a partner in the corporate and business practice and served for a number of years as Chairman of the firm’s Practice Management Committee and as Chairman of the Corporate and Business Department.  I have broad experience in all areas of corporate and business law. In addition to my legal experience, I have extensive experience in banking and venture capital. I served on the Board of Directors of Flagship Bank and Trust Company in Worcester from 1992 and served as Chairman through 2008. I currently serve on the Advisory Board for the Massachusetts regional division of People’s United Bank. I was actively involved in the development of the Worcester Biotechnology Park and served as the incorporator, trustee and counsel for the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Institute and its two venture capital subsidiaries, Commonwealth BioVentures and BioVentures Investors, for many years. I have also served as a director, officer, counsel and special advisor to a number of local, regional and international companies engaged in manufacturing, healthcare, biotechnology, electronics engineering, computer software and insurance and as a trustee for two independent secondary schools and one college in the Worcester area. I graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1970 with an A.B. in English. I served as a Peace Corps volunteer and taught English as a foreign language (TEFL) in Berkane, Morocco. I later taught TEFL with the American Language Academy when it was located in Newton, Massachusetts. I attended Boston College Law School and served as a member and editor of the Boston College Industrial Commercial Law Review. I am currently listed in and have been included in the publication of Best Lawyers in America for the last twenty (20) years in the area of corporate law and in the 2013 publication of Super Lawyers, New England Edition in business/corporate law. I am married and have two sons. I play golf, collect wine and read Shakespeare as hobbies. I find teaching a wonderful way to share my business and legal experience. WPI students are enthusiastic and hardworking and seem to have enjoyed my teaching style over the last seven years. I particularly enjoy watching how students absorb and incorporate the concepts of business ethics, critical thinking and law into their decision making as the course progresses during the Term.
