Dr. Lu has more than 20 years of experience including technical leadership positions in established automotive companies and start-ups.  He has published over 90 refereed papers and holds over 150 US patents in vehicle controls, automation, safety, performance, robotics, and mechatronics.

 Dr. Lu has been awarded the Henry Ford Technology Award twice for his significant contributions to automotive technologies. Applications of his contributions can be found in a number of implementations in millions of vehicles on the road. He has been actively involved in robotics and AI research since 2015.

Dr. Lu has served as an organizer, chair, speaker, and program committee member for various conferences. He is on the Editorial Board of ASME Journal of Autonomous Vehicles and Systems and International Journal of Vehicle Performance. He was an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology (2010-2016) and the IFAC Journal of Control Practice Engineering (2008-2014). He served as the Vice-Chair for Industry and Application at the 2015’s American Control Conference. 

Recognized for providing technical excellence and leadership through pioneering research, development, and innovation in vehicular technologies, Dr. Lu is honored as a Fellow by several organizations including ASME, IEEE, and SAE International.

Scholarly Work

Dr. Lu publishes research in areas including driver assistance, automated driving, robotics and mechatronics, vehicle control, and active safety. 

Dr. Lu also holds over 150 patents in these areas of application.
