More than 800 high school students from across the Northeast (along with family, friends, teachers, and other supporters) will flock to the WPI campus on March 12 and 13 for two events that help teens discover the excitement of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, and the rewards that a STEM-focused career can bring.
On March 12-13, WPI, which offers the nation's only bachelor's degree program in robotics engineering, will host a new regional tournament for FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. Approximately 1,000 members of 29 teams (which include high school students and their mentors and teachers) from seven Northeast states are expected to take part in the tournament.
Also on Friday, March 12, WPI will host the 55thWorcester Regional Science & Engineering Fair, one of six regional science fairs that culminate in the annual Massachusetts State High School Science & Engineering Fair. About 150 students will present their science projects for review by judges.
These events complement WPI's many well-respected K-12 outreach programs, which are focused on introducing young people to STEM fields. Dozens of WPI programs, including experiential summer camps, provide myriad learning opportunities and resources for both teachers and students in kindergarten through high school.
