What

FIRST LEGO League Qualifier Event

Where

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Campus Center Odeum, Worcester, Mass.

When

Saturday, Dec. 14, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why

This event is important because FLL introduces students to engineering problems at a young age.

The competition not only teaches them about problems associated with natural disasters, but focuses them on addressing ways to plan for or mitigate the effects of such disasters.

Details

Forty-two student teams from Massachusetts will participate in the FIRST LEGO League Qualifier tournament. The teams—composed of no more than 10 students between the ages of 9 and 14—will tackle the theme "Nature's Fury" and build robots out of LEGOs. The robots, in turn, are required to complete several tasks, including removing downed tree branches, getting an ambulance to people in need, and lifting a house to avoid flooding.

They will compete for the chance to participate in the state championship, RoboNautica, which will be held Saturday, Dec. 21, in Harrington Auditorium at WPI. The event is part of the FIRST LEGO League competition.
