WORCESTER, Mass. – Out of 2,000 student contributors, WPI mechanical engineering major Christopher Lammi was named one of the top 20 to the 2009 IBM Smarter Planet University Jam, which was held via an online forum on July 29. The virtual event was comprised of a massive brainstorming session, in which students and faculty from nearly 200 universities in 40 countries came together to think about ways to create a smarter planet. IBM called Lammi's contributions to the event "insightful and innovative," and his recognition was featured in the (Worcester) Telegram & Gazette's August 2, 2009 "College Town" column.
"Students worldwide contributed enthusiastically during the Jam, and we appreciate their active involvement," IBM officials stated on the company's website. "Thanks to all of our participating students."
IBM also reported that jammers were enthusiastic about creating a smarter planet, and were optimistic about the future. In fact, their polls revealed that nine out of 10 students believe we will be driving 100-miles per gallon cars by 2025, and 64 percent of students believe the world has a chance to reverse carbon emissions by 2025. Additionally, jammers came up with hundreds of progressive insights and innovations on topics such as environmental protection, fostering pollution-free and inexpensive energy, and improving healthcare.
