Kicking off Worcester Polytechnic Institute's (WPI) year-long observance of the centennial of Dr. Robert H. Goddard's graduation from WPI in 1908, the university's Student Government Association is sponsoring a "Goddard Day Celebration" to honor the "Father of Modern Rocketry" with a campus-wide barbeque. This free event is open to the public, and complimentary T-shirts reading "He Built, We Rock-it" will be given to attendees.
Goddard is one of WPI's best-known and most historically significant alumni. He was the first to use liquid propellants as rocket fuel, and is credited with the first successful launch of a liquid-fueled rocket -- from Auburn, Mass., on March 16, 1926. WPI is planning a year-long schedule of events to commemorate Goddard and his contributions to science, including the first annual Commemorative Water Rocket Competition, sponsored by the Physics Department, which will be held on Saturday, June 7 (rain date June 8), on Alumni Field.
