A content director for the new PBS series Design Squad will speak at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and show segments from the new children's television program produced by WGBH in Boston. The show, which features teens engaged in designing and building machines, is designed to help kids ages 9-13 understand what engineering is and why they might like to persue it. The seminar, co-sponsored by WPI's Center for Educational Development and Assessment, Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and Student Government Association, will provide the audience an opportunity to join a discussion about the motivation for the show, the process by which it evolved, its current content and format, and its future direction.
Who
Dan Frey is an associate professor at MIT, where he conducts research on engineering design and teaches systems engineering, statistics, and robust design. He and fellow MIT professor David Wallace are content directors for Design Squad. Frey has received an NSF CAREER Award, an R&D 100 award, the INCOSE best paper award, the Baker award for Outstanding Teaching, the Aero/Astro teaching award, and the Junior Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching.
