Worcester Polytechnic Institute's (WPI) engineering, computer science and computer and information sciences programs are among the best in the country, according to a new rankings report by College Factual, which recently provided its list of top schools to USA Today.
In its 2014 report, College Factual ranked WPI's computer science major third best in the country, while the engineering major was ranked sixth, overall. Within engineering, WPI's mechanical engineering major was recognized as second best in the country, biomedical engineering rated third best, civil engineering and chemical engineering majors were each ranked seventh, while electrical engineering ranked 11th. College Factual also ranked WPI's physics major 20th in the nation.
College Factual bases its rankings by major on a selection of characteristics, including the quality of the overall school, the reputation and establishment of the major within the school, the starting and mid-career salaries of graduates within the major, among other factors.
"These rankings speak to a tradition of academic excellence and innovation here at WPI, the value of our project-based learning approach, and the ability of our graduates to use what they learned here to achieve success early in their careers," said Kristin Tichenor, senior vice president. "It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our world-class faculty who have continued to build on WPI's legacy and reputation as one of the nation's top technological universities."
In addition to specific major rankings, College Factual also named WPI one of the top 25 overall best colleges in New England, and 23rd in the state for "Best Colleges for the Money."
