WPI students volunteer their time throughout the year at Worcester Public Schools
Department(s):
STEM Education CenterDuring the 23-24 Academic Year, five WPI students volunteered their time to tutoring, mentoring, and facilitating enrichment activities for elementary students who attend the YWCA afterschool programs at Clark Street Community School and Roosevelt Elementary School in Worcester. The YWCA of Central Massachusetts partnered with the WPI STEM Education Center to help recruit WPI students looking to volunteer their time to support and engage in Science, Math, and English Language Arts.
WPI students demonstrated their commitment to the community by volunteering for at least one term, creating connections with the students. They dedicated one to two days, 2-4 hours a week.
Students who volunteered:
- Julia Dowd, Senior, Chemical Engineering
- Jonell English, Freshmen, Chemical Engineering
- Grace Ho, Sophomore, Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) and Mathematics Science
- Vaansh Mansharamani, Junior, Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) and Computer Science
- Rebekah Mendoza, Senior, Society, Technology & Policy (STP)
- Taras Pylypenko, Junior, Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) and Computer Science
- Ivan Zheng, Junior, Computer Science
Elementary students who attend the YWCA After-School program often come from low-income, one-parent families. These families benefit from the additional academic support and help with homework for their children. The WPI students develop authentic relationships and gain appreciation for being a part of the Worcester community.
