WPI Athletics Weekly Update (Week of 11/12/18 - 11/18/18)

Sports & RecreationGarrett Stephenson earned MVP honors as Men's Basketball reclaimed the Ted Coghlin Memorial Tournament title with a 65-57 triumph over William Paterson Saturday afternoon in Harrington Auditorium. The Engineers, winner of three of the four tournaments, is now 3-0. Stephenson totaled 15 points and six rebounds after a 12-point, eight-rebound, two-block performance the previous night against SUNY Potsdam. Jake Wisniewski led all student-athletes with 17 point to go with five rebounds and three assists.
The quartet of Tyler Marsh, Chase Lind, Dan Wensley and Austin Shrewsbury all went 3-0 Saturday as No.12 Wrestling opened the dual meet portion of its schedule by going 2-1 in home super quad in the Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers defeated Norwich 45-3 in the opener to give head coach Matt Oney his first dual meet victory on Boynton Hill. WPI then defeated No. 21 Castleton 31-19 before falling to No. 24 Stevens (NJ) 21-19.
Jack Bauer was the lone WPI winner as Men's Swimming & Diving team topped host No. 25 Bowdoin, 154-144, and fell to No. 6 MIT, 233-67, Saturday afternoon. Bauer guided the ninth-ranked team in the latest CSCAA regional coaches' poll with a 1:55.06 in the 200-yard backstroke. He was also fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.19), as well as, a member of the second-place 200-yard medley relay (1:34.42) and third-place 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.56). Molly Sykes finished second in a pair of events as the WPI women's swimming & diving team was upended by No. 8 MIT and host No. 21 Bowdoin. Sykes led the Engineers (5-3) with a runner up time in the 200-yard IM (2:12.88) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.72), and was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.79).
McKenna Finken established a career-high of 17 points to help lead Women's Basketball to the Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament title game with a 69-57 victory over Bridgewater State Saturday night at University of New England. Finken and Spencer Vinson were WPI’s representatives at the All-Tournament team. Vinson scored 12 points and recorded team-bests of eight rebounds and two blocks, against the Bears.
Three teams are in action on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, including a basketball doubleheader in Harrington Auditorium. Men’s Basketball begins the twinbill by hosting Worcester State at 5:30pm while Women’s Basketball entertains Nichols at 7:30pm in the nightcap. Wrestling heads to Springfield the same day for a 6pm dual meet against Western New England.

Men’s Student-Athlete of the Week Garrett Stephenson - Basketball - Sophomore - Townsend, MA Garrett Stephenson from the basketball team has been tabbed as the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 18th. Stephenson averaged 13.3 points and eight rebounds, and was named the MVP of the fourth annual Ted Coghlin Memorial Tournament, in a 3-0 week. He began with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds against Albertus Magnus in the season opener on Tuesday. For the weekend, Stephenson totaled 12 points, eight boards and seven assists in the semifinal win over SUNY Potsdam and 15 points and six rebounds in the title game versus William Paterson. He also notched a pair of blocks versus Albertus Magnus and SUNY Potsdam. |
Women’s Student-Athlete of the Week Cailin Gonyea – Swimming & Diving - Junior - Southbridge, MA Cailin Goneya of the swimming & diving team has been named as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 18th. Gonyea turned in the quickest 1,000-yard freestyle time of the week among NEWMAC competitors with a third-place 10:59.44 in Saturday’s meet with nationally-ranked MIT and Bowdoin. The performance is currently third on the conference leaderboard so far this season. The junior was also fourth in the 500-yard version of the event with a 5:27.00 while her time from the previous week is currently fourth in the NEWMAC rankings. |
