Sports & RecreationMen's Swimming & Diving team won all four relays and five different individuals secured victories at the third annual Tech Sprints Saturday in the Sports & Recreation Center. Jack Bauer, Dave Chen, Jackson Perry and Jean Philippe Miralda swept the medley relays with a 1:35.97 in the 200 and a 42.96 in the 100 as Sid Williams, Perry, Clayton Besch and Bauer claimed the 100-yard freestyle (39.42) and 200-yard freestyle (1:27.03).
Katherine Pawlak won four individual events and was part of three victorious relay teams as Women's Swimming & Diving hosted the third annual Tech Sprints Saturday in the Sports & Recreation Center. Pawlak teamed with Sydney Seo, Molly Sykes and Audrey Berner to begin the evening session with a 1:52.37 in the 200-yard medley relay. The rookie later secured the 25-yard freestyle (11.30).
Xandria Korn and Sydney Packard each won an event with an NCAA Division III Top 25 performance as Women's Track & Field team competed at Tufts' Gantcher Center for the second consecutive weekend. Korn cleared a personal-best 5-4.50, and is currently No. 18 on the NCAA Division III performance list, in the high jump while Packard turned in the 25th-ranked mile (5:08.21).
Oliver Thomas clocked the fourth-fastest 60-meter hurdle time this year in Division III at the All-New England All-Divisions Championships Friday night at the Reggie Lewis Center and Malek Elshakhs won the same event at the Tufts Cupid Challenge on Saturday. Thomas delivered a WPI record 8.13 in the first round on Friday night. He then registered identical times of 8.21 in Saturday's semifinal and final. The lone Division III student-athlete to reach the final placed third.
Andrew Ellis and Dan Wensley each went 2-0 Saturday as Wrestling split a pair of matches at the Coast Guard super quad. The Crimson and Gray knocked off Bridgewater State 46-6 in the second match after falling to nationally-ranked NYU 29-13 to open the day. In the victory over Bridgewater State, WPI won nine straight bouts after the Bears took a forfeit win at 125 pounds. Ellis and Carter Lewis got the run started with consecutive first period pins at 133 (2:01) and 141 (0:43). Later on Wensley, ranked eighth nationally at 184, pinned his opponent at 2:11.
Bailey Savage scored 15 points as Women’s Basketball defeated Coast Guard, 67-44, in NEWMAC action on Wednesday night in Rowland Hall. Savage shot 6-12 from the field and 3-6 from behind the arc. Alyssa Paul added 10 points in the victory and Spencer Vinson scored nine points with a game-high nine rebounds. Victoria Mirecki also netted nine points to go along with seven rebounds and Alex Scariati chipped in with six points and six caroms.
Kahleb Downing netted 17 of his career-high 19 points in the second half as Men's Basketball defeated crosstown and NEWMAC foe Clark, 79-55, Wednesday night in Harrington Auditorium. Downing also totaled six assists and four steals while Colin McNamaraadded 16 points and Jake Wisniewski finished with 12. Jake Needleman and Dakota Wheeler chipped in with nine apiece. Classmate Ethan Harrell (Wexford, PA) hauled in a game-best eight rebounds.
Men’s and Women’s Basketball are in Harrington Auditorium for a doubleheader on Wednesday. The women face Wheaton in their annual #PlayforKay game at 6pm while the men tangle with Babson in a key NEWMAC matchup at 8pm. Wrestling takes center stage on Saturday evening in Harrington, hosting Springfield under the spotlight at 5pm. Track and Field is action this weekend at the BU Valentine Invitational with the women in action on Friday and the men competing on Saturday.

Men’s Student-Athlete of the Week Alex Gallant – Swimming & Diving - Senior - Lakeville, MA Alex Gallant from the swimming & diving team has been selected as the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 3rd. Gallant posted a trio of top 3 finishes as the Engineers hosted the third annual Tech Sprints. In addition to the second fastest 100-yard IM (53.21) in Division III last week, the senior clocked a 12.56 in the 25-yard breaststroke and a 1:00.01 in the 100-yard breaststroke. He was also part of a pair of B final triumphs with a 2:00.59 in the 200-yard IM and a combined 45.50 in the 100-yard medley relay. |
Women’s Student-Athlete of the Week Victoria Mirecki - Basketball - Freshman - Rock Tavern, NY Victoria Mirecki of the basketball team has been honored as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 3rd. Mirecki was consistent with 8.5 points and eight rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Engineers. Both games also saw Mirecki shoot 57.1 percent (4-7) from the field. After notching nine points and seven rebounds in a win over Coast Guard, the freshman posted eight points and tied her career high with WPI-best nine boards at Babson. |
