- Learning with Stories
Storytelling and Reflection, In and Out of the Classroom 9 - 10 AM For: Faculty
In a world where we are mostly rewarded for what we do, reflection often takes a back seat. Yet reflection is when experiences are processed and abstracted so that learning can be translated to new situations. This session, directed toward faculty, introduces alternative reflection techniques for moving beyond traditional written reflections at the end of a course or module. The workshop includes time for faculty to explore opportunities for integrating reflection into their classrooms.
- Creating Your Story
A Framework for Thriving in a Time of Uncertainty 10:30 AM - 12 noon For: Everyone
This session, open to all, introduces the Thrive Framework, designed to help students not just survive but flourish during and beyond their time at our institutions. Participants will learn about "thrive learning objectives" and explore examples of impactful initiatives. The workshop also covers systems and methods of assessing student thriving. By the end, attendees will gain practical tools to enhance the student experience in a holistic way.
- Teaching with Stories
Introducing and Thinking About Story-Rich Pedagogies 1 - 2:30 PM
For: Faculty, Grad Students, Postdocs - Anyone teaching or considering a teaching career
Intended for faculty, grad students, postdocs -- anyone teaching or considering a teaching career -- this session explores how storytelling can bring data to life and create emotional connections in teaching. Participants will learn frameworks and methods for practicing "Story-Rich Pedagogies," including STEEPLED, Product Archaeology, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The workshop will help educators use stories to enhance their teaching and provide opportunities to practice telling their own stories. Reflection activities will guide participants in starting their storytelling journey.
