School of EngineeringCongratulations to WPI Mechanical Engineering Professor Cosme Furlong for his recent award entitled “Eardrum function in live and cadaveric ears: Research and clinical relevance” sponsored by Research Project Grant (R01) from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), NIH. This research is a joint effort between WPI’s Center for Holographic Studies and Laser micro-mechaTronics (CHSLT), Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary (MEEI), and Harvard Medical School and it represents continuation of a productive long standing collaboration between researchers at these institutions. Goals include the testing and validation of different theories of eardrum function, studying eardrum response to transient acoustic excitation, and the study of eardrum transient response to diagnose different middle ear diseases. Computational methods and ultra-high speed digital holographic interferometry (DHI) developed at WPI will be tested and validated for clinical utility prior to clinical trials in patients.
