Okanagan Charter Adoption Spotlight – WPI Club Sports and Intramurals
Department(s):
Marketing CommunicationsToday, WPI will adopt the Okanagan Charter, recognizing essential interconnections between people, place, and planet in elevating community health and well-being for those occupying our campus and its environs, both now and into the future.
The following is part of a series of spotlights written by the people behind the resources, spaces, programs, and groups at WPI that work to improve the well-being of all who call WPI home, both here and abroad.
At WPI, Club Sports are among the most popular way students get engaged: The WPI Club Sports program consists of 50 clubs with over 2,200 participants. Club Sports teams are student-run and may be competitive, instructional, and/or recreational in nature, and they promote excellence, accountability, and leadership. Participating in a Club Sport allows students an opportunity to compete against other colleges and universities while promoting learning and developing leadership skills.
The success of any Club Sport depends on the professionalism and leadership shown by the club officers, advisors, and coaches. Teams are created for students, by students, and fall under the supervision of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and Athletics (PERA Department). Individual clubs establish their own membership requirements (which must be consistent with the Club constitution), dues, and club activities. Club members nominate student officers who run the day-to-day operations, which include scheduling practices, activities, and games, contracting referees, arranging transportation, and budgeting.
The WPI Club Sports program is an integral part of Wellness & Physical Education programs. Seventy percent of Club Sports programs can register for WPE credit, which provides students with the opportunity to both obtain credits and enjoy the benefits of Club participation.
