As part of the university’s strategic plan, WPI focuses on creating an inclusive environment that inspires students, faculty, and staff to grow as individuals and as members of the global community. On November 13, 2024, WPI will adopt the Okanagan Charterrecognizing essential interconnections between people, place, and planet in elevating community health and well-being for those occupying our campus and its environs, both now and into the future. Created in June 2015, the Charter provides institutions with a common language, principles, and framework to become health- and well-being-promoting campuses.

Our adoption of the Charter reflects the university’s values and our commitment to prioritizing wellness across our entire campus community, while also benefiting society at large. The following is part of a series of spotlights written by the people behind the resources, spaces, programs, and groups at WPI that work to improve the well-being of all who call WPI home, both here and abroad.

Active Minds

Active Minds

Active Minds is a mental health awareness organization on campus whose goal is to destigmatize the conversation about mental health among peers. At Active Minds’ weekly general body meetings (GBMs), students learn about various mental health topics, discuss those topics in the context of their own lives and within the WPI community, and participate in a fun or de-stressing activity. Active Minds also hosts and participates in events with other campus organizations including the Center for Well-Being and the Mental Health Committee. The time and location of the weekly GBMs change termly; updated times are always available on myWPI or our Instagram page @activemindswpi. Members of the WPI community can also reach out to the Active Minds executive board at activeminds@wpi.edu if they have any questions.

As a club, Active Minds strives to promote wellness on campus by providing a casual and friendly space to learn about mental health and to minimize any barriers WPI students may experience in seeking out this education. We are a small but mighty club on campus and are looking to expand our reach. Through education and open conversation, we hope to reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking, and prevent suicides by empowering young adults to speak openly about mental health.
