Career and Professional Development

Grad Student Training and Readiness Sessions (STARS) A multi-session series run monthly throughout the academic year to provide overviews on a variety of pertinent career and professional development topics.

  • Finding an Internship November 15th 12pm – 1pm Campus Center Hagglund Conference Room Lunch provided!  

Graduate Researcher Education and Training (GREAT) Series The GREAT series is for graduate student researchers, Masters Thesis and PhD students, and will provide training on a range of skills researchers need to be successful. Upcoming sessions:  

  • Creating and Delivering an Effective Research Seminar – 12 -1 PM on November 19 in Atwater Kent 233.  Free Lunch provided. 

Postdoc Position Search Boot Camp November 11 and 18. 12-1 PM via Zoom. This two session virtual workshop is for PhD students considering seeking a postdoc position now or in the future. Please register to receive Zoom information and to receive recordings of the sessions if unable to participate live.  

ID500: Responsible Conduct of Research course (0 credits) Spring Semester 2025. 11:00-11:50 AM on Wednesdays, hybrid format with some sessions in person in HL114 and some on Zoom. Rory Flinn, Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies, is running a graduate level zero credit course, Responsible Conduct of Research, ID 500, in Spring 2025. Registration for the course must be completed through Workday. Postdocs should contact me to get officially registered.

Social, Community, and Wellness Activities 

Milk and Cookies at OASIS! Join ODIME every Friday from 12:00-2:00pm ET for free, freshly baked cookies in the OASIS House! We will also partner with campus offices and student organizations throughout the academic year so stay tuned. For information or accommodations, contact ODIME at diversity@wpi.edu

Are you staying on campus during the Thanksgiving holiday? Tech Eats is now taking pre-orders for breakfast and dinner for those who may need a meal for the holiday. Meals are free for students with a residential meal plan and $14 for all others, thanks to generous sponsorship from GSG and SGA.

Funding Opportunities and Competitions

NYS Science Policy Fellowship This is a two-year, in person fellowship that places highly accomplished PhDs with expertise in science and technology in the New York State executive and legislative branches for hands-on experience in state government and to lend their expertise to the policymaking process. Application deadline is Friday, December 20 @ 5pm EST

ORISE research opportunities with a variety of Department of Defense sponsors  ORISE is currently accepting applications for a variety of research opportunities at their affiliated sites. The ORISE opportunities are typically twelve month appointments, with the possibility to be renewed for additional twelve month research periods (5 years max). 

PhD Scholarships The Open Education Database (OEDb) maintains a list of PhD scholarship opportunities which provide funding support for the pursuit of a PhD in a variety of disciplines and research areas, some of which may be relevant for WPI PhD students. 

Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities

Toys for Tots – The Housing Office at WPI is collecting Toys for Tots.  Please drop any toy donations at the Housing Office at East Hall (30 Boynton Street). 

Friendly House of Worcester - provides essential resources to the Worcester community including transitional support, social services, youth programs, housing, food, and more. Volunteers needed for Thanksgiving Distribution, Toy Drive, and Holiday Party. Sign up here

Highlighted Resources

The SWEET (Supporting WPI through Effective and Equitable Teamwork) Center offers drop-in hours at our office in the Leshin Project Center. The SWEET Center helps support teams and individuals to create positive team experiences. Students may drop in and meet with SWEET Fellows, other WPI students, and staff who have lots of teamwork experience and special training on how to support effective and equitable teamwork. 

CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification – the next training will be on November 16th. EHS leads a variety of essential safety trainings for free.  Please check out the upcoming trainings here.
