Computer Science Professor Lane Harrison to Join 11-school Research Collaboration on AI tools for Intelligence Professionals
Department(s):
Marketing CommunicationsLane Harrison, associate professor of computer science, is one of 17 professors nationwide to receive research funding through the Laboratory for Analytic Sciences (LAS) at North Carolina State University.
With funding from the US Department of Defense, the LAS collaborators will conduct year-long, national security-related research projects in partnership with LAS staff. This year’s projects will focus on artificial intelligence-driven human-machine teaming, content triage, and operationalizing machine learning and recommender systems in intelligence workflows.
Harrison’s work on the grant will focus on developing EvalOps, a framework for rapid and scalable evaluation of AI-enabled tools and interfaces. EvalOps addresses a critical challenge in the AI landscape: with the moving target of models and capabilities, how can we effectively align AI-driven interfaces with end-user needs and workflows? EvalOps aims to solve this challenge by providing technical infrastructure and guidelines for more rapid and systematic evaluations of AI interfaces through empirical studies, interactive experiments, and qualitative stakeholder feedback. By integrating evaluation capabilities directly into AI system development, EvalOps will improve the usability, adoption, and operational effectiveness of next-generation AI tools for intelligence professionals.
