Why Choose WPI as an International Student?
The college search process is an exciting one, especially as an international student considering studying in the United States. You've got thousands of colleges and universities to choose from, so your top question might be: Why Worcester Polytechnic Institute?
WPI doesn’t just offer a renowned STEM-focused education—there are also opportunities to participate in groundbreaking research and interdisciplinary project work, immerse yourself in the humanities and arts, and become part of our diverse, supportive community. It's all brought together on our beautiful traditional New England campus.
What’s more, it's free to apply to WPI, and we’re also a test-blind institution, which means that SAT and ACT scores aren’t required as part of your application. You're more than just your test scores, and we want to see what makes you, you.
With that in mind, we want to share a few of the things that make WPI, WPI.

WPI has 18 academic departments and 70+ degree programs to choose from, ranging from mechanical engineering and computer science to biomedical engineering and chemistry. And the best part? If you start working toward your degree and realize you have a different (or another) passion, it’s easy for you to shift gears by switching your major, adding a minor, or pursuing a double major. It's your education—we're here to help you make sure it's exactly what you envision from day one and beyond.

Getting a glimpse of life as a WPI student is one thing, but we know that you want to see what life as a WPI graduate is like too. WPI graduates regularly secure positions at companies ranging from Apple and Micrsoft to Google, Tesla, and Amazon. Your future’s yours to make, but whatever path you decide to follow, hundreds of internship and co-op opportunities and lifetime career resources ensure that you’ll have the skills, resources, and support you need to succeed.

At WPI, your education is synonymous with project work—you can’t have one without the other. From your first days on campus, you’ll take what you learn in the classroom and bring it to life through project work, both on campus and at one of our 50+ global project centers around the world. Through your projects, you’ll broaden your perspective, immerse yourself in learning, and gain experiences that will prove invaluable personally and professionally.

WPI is located in New England’s second-largest city, Worcester, Massachusetts. About 65 kilometers west of Boston (WPI is just 2.5 kilometers from Union Station, which offers affordable daily train services to and from Boston) and three hours from New York City, Worcester is a leader in healthcare, education, biotechnology, IT, and financial services. It’s brimming with opportunities for you to find an internship, begin a professional career, or launch a startup—and, of course, it’s got countless places to explore and ways to have fun when you’re not in the classroom. From big-city opportunities to small-town charm, Worcester’s got the best of all worlds, and is the perfect place to call your home away from home.

It’s something you’ll hear time and again: what makes WPI special is the people, and that includes you. From the International Student Council and the Brazilian Student Association to the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers and more, you’ll find a club that makes you feel at home, as well as a welcoming community and various resources across campus. While we may have different majors, passions, and interests, the one thing we have in common is that we all want each other to succeed. You'll have all the resources and support you need to have fun, make memories, and achieve your goals.

If you’re confident that WPI is the place for you, we want to do everything we can to help you join us in Worcester, which is why we offer financial assistance to international students who enter as first-years or transfers. 95% of international students receive some form of funding or financial aid support from WPI—including two all-encompassing scholarships specifically for international students.
