Minor in Sustainability Engineering

Minor

As an engineer, it’s not a question of whether your work will affect the world around you; it’s a matter of how much it will. A minor in sustainability engineering will help you better understand how your work will impact the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of the planet.

Even if you're not an engineering major, but are interested in contributing to the creation of a more sustainable world, you’re still welcome—and encouraged—to apply.

Curriculum

Students minoring in sustainability engineering will be required to complete two units of work listed in the undergraduate catalog, one of which may be double-counted with other degree requirements (non-engineering students may have to complete background courses that may increase the total minor program to more than two units).

The two units of work include the following:

  • Course in introductory engineering sustainability (1/3 unit, at least)
  • 1000-level course in sustainability (1/3 unit, at most)
  • Humanities, business, and/or SSPS coursework (2/3 unit)
  • Engineering coursework (2/3 unit)

The full list of allowable courses is included in the catalog. 

In addition to the two units of classroom work, you’ll select a focus area, which may include such options as “Sustainable Engineering in the Developing World,” “Engineering Design for Sustainability,” “Resource Recovery and Reuse,” and “Green Buildings.”

Application Process

If you’re interested in a minor in sustainability engineering, complete the Minor Declaration Form from the Registrar’s Office, as well as the Completion Form from the Office of Sustainability.
