ID305X is a survey course of Latin American and Caribbean films produced after the 1980's. In this course we will study films and the cultural issues presented and discussed in them. The course is geared to help students recognize strategies of persuasion in film and to develop a cultural reading literacy that will help them to interpret underlying meanings in Latin American/Caribbean films. Among the cultural issues that will be presented in the course are: inmigration, gender roles, sexual and national identity, politics, and cultural hegemony.
We will be screening/discussing movies such as: El Mariachi (U.S.), El Norte (Guatemala), Strawberry and Chocolate (Cuba), The Official History (Argentina), We All Are Stars (Per), Portrait of Teresa (Cuba), and La guagua area / The Airbus (Puerto rico).
