The WPI Seal
WPI's official seal was designed by Professor Alonzo S. Kimball and
approved by the WPI Board of Trustees in 1888. It includes a central
shield containing graphical elements that relate to WPI's history and
mission: a heart (symbolizing Worcester, the heart of the
commonwealth) and two open books and an arm and hammer (representing
WPI's heritage of balancing theory with application). This heritage is
also conveyed in the university's motto, Lehr und Kunst (learning and
skilled arts), which appears in a banner above the shield. WPI's full
name and founding date (in Roman numerals) appear in a ring around the
shield and banner.
The seal that appears in the WPI Logo is a simplified version of
the official WPI seal. It may be easily distinguished from the
official seal by the founding date, which appears in Arabic, rather
that Roman, numerals.
WPI's official seal is trademarked. It is reserved for official
transactions of the university (for example, diplomas and
transcripts), and its use is, therefore, strictly limited. All uses of
the official seal must be approved, in advance, by University
Marketing. When used, it must be reproduced from official artwork and
may not be altered or edited in any way. Elements of the official seal
may not be used separately as parts of other logos of graphical
elements
