Laptop Computer Network Connections in Gordon Library

Network connections for laptop computers are available throughout the Gordon Library to WPI faculty, staff, and students who have registered their computers for network access. Locate active ports.

If your computer is not registered yet, or if you previously registered it for access from a specific academic or administrative building, please see the directions to register your computer. Students who previously registered their computers as Residence systems should be able to connect to the network immediately.

If your laptop has a wireless card, the library also offers wireless access. See the directions for wireless networking if interested in that option. This wireless setup also will work in the Campus Center and other campus wireless locations. The library also loans laptops already equipped with wireless cards for use in the building.

Gordon Library Active Laptop Port Locations

Look for the white network drop boxes containing anywhere from one to six ports. The data ports are red, white, and blue. In general, the red ports are active. In some locations both red and white ports are active.

Register Your Computer on the Network

  1. Use a computer already connected to the network, and open the IP Request Selection Page. (Note that this page will open in a new window, while this help page remains open .)
  2. Enter your CCC UNIX username and password at the top of the form to authenticate your request, and click on IP Request.
  3. Select Register a New System.
  4. Fill in all required information. For wired connections, be sure to choose Portable from the Subnet menu. For wireless cards, be sure to choose Wireless from the Subnet menu, and continue by following the instructions for wireless networking.
  5. CCC will confirm your registration request via email. Please do not connect your computer to the network until you receive confirmation.
  6. Please note that your computer must be using DHCP. BOOTP and/or entering a static IP are not allowed and will not work.
  7. Laptop network connections in Gordon Library are subject to WPI's Acceptable Use Policy. Please review its provisions if you are unfamiliar with them.
  8. If you have any questions concerning the request form or access to the WPI network, please contact the CCC Helpdesk by email at helpdesk@wpi.edu, or phone campus extension 5888.

Note: If your laptop computer has already been registered for access from a specific academic or administrative building, you will need to change the Subnet setting to Portable before you can connect through a library port. Return to the IP Request Selection Page, and choose Modify System to make this change.
