I have read all this before, establish the web restrictions.
What is fair use?
Copyright materials can be used in educational situations if the use is restricted to the course. The law offers four factors to evaluate and to balance in any determination of fair use:
- the purpose of the use, including a non-profit educational purpose;
- the nature of the copyrighted work;
- the amount of the copying; and
- the effect of the copying on the potential market for, or value of, the original work.
The law has common-sense implications that the copying not be wholesale, and that the audience be limited. This web page offers you a way to control the copyright materials which you may want to display to your students via the web. Restricting materials to access only by people at the university has been found to be too broad; is the best to restrict access to members of a class.
This web page offers mechanisms to set up an access file which will list those individuals in the class so that their CCC UNIX login ID and password will define their ability to access the information.
The page uses the web to offer the same mechanisms which are available in the classlist command which an instructor can use after login to CCC UNIX systems.
The first step is to collect the materials in a subdirectory of your web, which will separate the material so that you can restrict access to that area. Materials which are not copyrighted need not be restricted, so this process is not required for the whole course web area.
The course department and number must be specified; if no section is specified, then all sections will be included. If you want to specify multiple courses to have access to the same material, you can use this page again to add to the existing list of students. The students are listed in groups which are named for the course which they attend. e.g. if you list students in CS course number 1234, then the group will be named cs1234.
The restrictions are described in a file named .htaccess in the subdirectory, and the student group memberships are listed in a file named .htgroup.
